Personalizing Place - Part 1

Presented by: Bruce Hucko

Arts & Culture

Date: May 7, 2026

Time: 4:00 PM Utah Time - 5:00 PM Utah Time

Photographer and Art Educator Bruce Hucko will share his personal artistic evolution, from images made to illustrate books and NPS interpretive media programs, to ones that employ the external landscape to express the internal landscape of self. Using color and b&w images from his 50+ year career, he’ll discuss the shift from creating images “of” places for others, to making images “about” thoughts and ideas for self. Both require strong compositions that use the Language of Art. Learn how Bruce enters a landscape, decides on subject, and then resolves the image using Lightroom and Photoshop. With practical and poetic means, you’ll enhance your own photographic experience no matter what camera you use.

Among the mini-topics covered are: finding personal vision, creative intention, in the shadow of icons, photographic equivalence (making images that are like how we are), watch your language (our words influence or relationship to place, processing for personality, personal influences (Navajo & Pueblo culture, Minor White and other historic photographers, poets and dancers), and how technical considerations must serve our art, not the other way around! This program will be of interest to anyone wanting to enhance their outdoor experience, with or without a camera!

Location: Kanab City Library Community Meeting Room, 374 North Main Street, Kanab, UT
